Dark Discussions Episode 066 - Scott Sigler's Infected and Contagious

In 2001, an unknown author named Scott Sigler wrote a book entitled Earthcore which was released as an ebook during ebook infancy by Time Warner/AOL. With its success the novel was to be published in print. However it's released was scrapped due to the economic downturn in the United States. When licensing reverted back to the author Scott Sigler decided to release the novel as a chapter by chapter podcast.
Having a following of over 10,000 individuals, Sigler continued to write and release his work as podcasts. In 2006, his novel entitled Infected (originally entitled Infection) was released and brought him immediate fame. The work of fiction gained notoriety due to its horrific violence, gonzo set pieces, and Michael Crichton like story telling. Bringing in audiences of techno-thrillers, horror novels, and science fiction, the story eventually was published by Crown Publishing and became a best seller.
The story revolves around Scary Perry Dawsey, an ex-collegiate American football player, who happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. While the CIA and the CDC follow an outbreak of a strange and unknown disease that turns its victims into homicidal maniacs and may have extraterrestrial origins, the reader watches Perry's own battles with this ghastly phenomena while also dealing with his own childhood demons.
Dark Discussions discusses Infected and its fantastic follow up novel Contagious and how they changed the landscape of techno-thrillers and horror novels. Arguably the best horror novel never mind techno-thriller story in the past ten years, the two book series has made fans of thousands and tells a tale that's arguable one of the most horrifying and most exciting stories ever put to print. Fans of Scott Sigler will be happy that a third in the series tentatively entitled Pandemic may be in the works.

Episode 065 - Maurice Devereaux Focus: 2008's End of the Line

If you like smart cinema wrapped in a stylish genre film, End of the Line gives it to you. Some would say the movie was a tour de force for independent genre film making by one man. The movie, a 2008 Canadian production, was edited, produced, directed, and written by Maurice Devereaux. And with its fantastic practical special effects, the powerful musical score by Martin Gauthier, and the wonderful performances fronted by both Robin Wilcock and Joan McBride, the film's screenplay dives into a relevant topic in today's world.
Karen, a nurse at a large hospital specializing in psych patients, heads home late one night on the subway. Ever scary, a woman all alone in an awfully empty underground, her evening turns into a terrifying escapade when a group of strangers begin to perform violent acts of bloodshed. She along with other passengers group together in a desperate plan of escape as they are pursued by opportunists as well as folks who think they have a greater purpose.
Dark Discussions discuss a film that could be a supernatural apocalyptic tale with a conclusion that leads to demons, religion, heaven and hell, and judgment day. Yet is the film something more grounded in reality, where conspiracy theories, insanity, over zealous religious cults, or simply mundane criminal behavior are the reason behind everything? Rounding out the episode, the very talented Maurice Devereaux is interviewed to give us a bit of the secrets behind the mayhem.

Dark Discussions Episode 64 - The Hitcher

In the mid 1980’s, horror films seemed to become derivative with releases of copy cats and sequels that were being pumped out as fast as they could. Both low budget filmmakers and studio executives saw dollar signs before they saw originality. Yet in 1986 screenwriter Eric Red came up with a tale that seemed to buck this shallow trend. Prior to writing Near Dark, the Kathryn Bigelow helmed vampire film, he burst upon the seen with his script for The Hitcher, a dark and psychologically brutal film.
Directed by first time director Robert Harmon, the film divided critics more so than many films of the time. With its throwback story to such gritty movies as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and its twenty-years-too-soon foreshadowing of films such as Seven or Silence of the Lambs, folks such as Roger Ebert called it “diseased and corrupt” while Newsweek Magazine thought it to be superb.
With a supporting role by Jeffrey DeMunn and starring box office draws of the time, C. Thomas Howell and Jennifer Jason Leigh, the film became a cult classic because of the career defining role of Dutch actor Rutger Hauer. Known for playing disturbed characters in film, Rutger Hauer steals the movie as a sociopath that brings psychological chills in mannerisms and speech more so than any onscreen physical violence.
Critics have analyzed and dissected the film. Topics as wide as split personality disorder, homophobic angst, and the fight between heaven and hell have been discussed as meanings behind the film. Dark Discussions studies the cult classic with special guest M.J. Preston, author of the horror novel The Equinox, and honor a film that co-host Eric has declared as one of the top ten best horror films of all time.

Exorcast Episode 19

We’re back! After a week long absence we are back to bring you another gimmick filled episode and Vincent has no idea what episode we are on! We may be a few days late but this week was the Fourth of July so because of that holiday we decided it was only right to do a few holiday themed and America themed films. We have William Lustig’s Uncle Sam, Bobcat Goldthwait’s new black-comedy God Bless America, David Arquette’s slasher The Tripper and then venturing off the gimmick we take a look at Ryan Nicholson’s The Bleeding Lady. We deliver Last Rites to a forgotten VHS title called Lunchmeat directed by Kirk Alex. Vincent gives us a look back at Fright Night Film Fest and asks me a few questions about my visit to Hawaii, then tells me that exorcast is more important. Stay tuned for next week because it will once again be another show released on Friday the 13th! Maybe we will do some more Friday films, who knows….maybe we will do Friday starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker!? Anyway, the power of Cast Compels You and all that stuff… Download from here.
