Dark Discussions Episode 063 - Splinter (2008)

In 2008 a small film played the festival circuits to resounding critical praise. The film, entitled Splinter, brought a refreshing take on horror with the interesting concept of combining a siege film with both the familiar monster movie and body horror. Using biology, specifically a parasitic mold that in some way takes over parts of its host, the movie stays "small" allowing the concept to grow in a way that keeps it grounded in reality.
When a young couple's tent breaks while on a camping trip, they decide to head to a motel for the night. On the way they are carjacked by a man and woman on the run from the law. What was supposed to be a tranquil weekend under the stars turns into a hostage situation. The group make a routine stop at a convenience store and gas station where they make a horrific discovery. A dangerous life form traps them inside the building which requires them to join together in a fight for survival.
Co-hosts Mike and Philip discuss the film and pay close attention to the science behind the creature. With a running time of only eighty-two minutes, the movie surprisingly is able to leave no stones unturned demonstrating how tightly written the script is. Join us and listen as Dark Discussions give their reasons why Splinter is a gem of a film that should not be overlooked by genre fans.

Dark Discussions Podcast Episode 062 - Prometheus (2012)

It all started back in the mid-1970's when screenwriters/filmmakers Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett came up with an amazing story about a crew from a mining spacecraft that hears a sentient beacon on a nondescript planetoid. When they go to explore the unknown signal they discover a horror that lead to the classic science fiction horror film, 1979's Ridley Scott directed Alien, and began a franchise that included three sequels and two spin offs with another beloved franchise, Predator.
With the release of 2012's Prometheus, a film that has been described as anything from a prequel to Alien or a distinct story set in the Alien universe, Ridley Scott returns to a franchise that made him the iconic director that he happens to be today. With a larger scope and a story that delves into questions about religion, human origin, and existential topics as vast as the ultimate meaning of life, the film presents itself as hard science fiction, in the scale of 2001: A Space Odyssey as well as the novels of such authors as Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov.
Dark Discussions as a four way round table discusses a film that has been arguably one of the most anticipated films of the year and gives their opinion on a stunningly beautiful yet flawed film. Get ready for an in-depth conversation while keeping your mind open to both the criticism and the praise.

Vicis Interimo 116 Cool Air

Welcome to episode 116. This week we review volume one of the HP Lovecraft Collection, which is a collection of short stories. The main feature is the story 'Cool Air', followed by 'Nyarlathotep', 'Imperfect Solution', 'The Hound', and 'The Hapless Antiquarian'. Our general feeling is that this would be an enjoyable watch for fans of HPL's work, but perhaps not for those who are unfamiliar with his stories. If anyone out there gets a chance to see these (who isn't already an HPL fan) we'd be interested to hear from you! smiley Other short topics this week include the movies 'Conan the Barbarian' (2011), 'The Eagle', and the animated TV show 'Adventure Time', as well as the mystery of crystal tears. Hollywood's famous Magic Castle is also a topic this week, as we had the pleasure of spending an evening there recently. Thanks for joining us!
Cool Air; The H.P. Lovecraft Collection Vol. 1: 1999 (NR) 140 minutes
In this film based on H.P. Lovecraft's famous short story, aspiring author Randolph Carter (Bryan Moore) takes a room in a cheap boarding house and befriends the mysterious Dr. Muñoz (Jack Donner), who resuscitates the writer after he suffers a near-fatal heart attack. When the doctor shares a terrifying secret, Carter must reexamine his ideas of life and death. Several shorts adapted from Lovecraft tales are also included.

Horrific Visions #02 Deus Irae

For our second episode, Horrorphilia is happy to bring you an awesome gory horror short. This is the type of exorcism movie that I enjoy.
A fragile border separates our world from the realm of darkness, a limit where nightmarish creatures await in the shadows, looking for a way into our world: the tender souls of the weak and the innocent. Once possessed, people are used as portals to infect our reality.
Only one thing has been standing in their way: a secret order of priests, who devote their lives and souls to protect this border. Soldiers of a silent war, who hunt the monsters down to look them in the eye… and blow them away.
They are the ‘Deus Irae’
Director : Pedro Cristiani

Dark Discussions Episode 061 - 2000 and Beyond The Best Part 2

Four lists of the top ten best genre horror films since 2000. Dark Discussions continues their second part of their four way round table of the best movies beginning with the millennium going forward. Remakes and re-imaginings such as Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead make the list as well as a few Korean and French films. Vampires appear in a few films as do mutants from the underground. Stephen King showed up with The Mist in part one, but does he appear again? Torture porn standards like Hostel and The Devil’s Rejects lead a wave of an interesting subgenre. The nations of Norway, Sweden, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the US join Korea and France. And could an interesting film from an unlikely place like Serbia be listed?
With a wide range of films including directing legends such as Martin Scorsese and Sam Raimi appearing alongside newer sensations like Eli Roth, Edgar Wright, and Christopher Smith, you can imagine the list is as diverse and wide ranging as all the horror subgenres combined.
Wrapping up we discuss some of our top genre directors the past twelve years and where they stack up against others and the future. We also list some of the alternate films that just missed making the lists. So listeners, get ready with pen and paper and start writing down a group of films that you should go out and search for to give you a fright tonight … or for a future Halloween spectacular.

Dark Discussions Episode 060 - Frank Herbert's Dune

John W. Campbell, the editor of the science fiction magazine Analog Science Fiction and Fact, took a manuscript by a little known author named Frank Herbert entitled Dune and serialized it within the publication between the years 1963 through 1965. What resulted was a story that many literary critics say is the greatest science fiction novel in the history of literature. With high praise indeed, Dune became an international phenomena that equaled such other written series as C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia and J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth books.
Taking place within a fully realized world, Dune was more than just a novel. Within its pages, an entire fantastical world was created where an intergalactic feudal universe was surrounded by political intrigue, religious fervor, and supernatural mysticism. A precious substance referred to as melange which bends the mind allowing warp travel and even in special cases premeditation becomes the center piece of power and influence. Yet it is only found on the planet of Arrakis. This world therefore becomes the focus of those with authority and war soon breaks out. Could the prophecy of the populace of Arrakis, in which a champion one day would come, be mere fable, fact, or coincidence?
The legacy of Dune has resulted in an entire series of books published continuing the story first printed within Analog Science Fiction and Fact. While readers enjoyed the story’s intrigue, critical analysis showed the tale had so much more to say. Such topics as ecology, gender issues, environmentalism, the decline of nations, religion, and faith permeate the story and have brought great discussion of what the real meaning of the novel is.
