Dark Discussions Episode 069 - Jaws (1975)
In 1973, author Peter Benchley had his now famous novel, Jaws, published to great acclaim. Inspired by a number of real life incidents of sharks attacking humans, the novel is the journey of three very different men who come together to hunt down a shark that has been terrorizing sunbathers and tourists of a small Northeastern American ocean community.
Paramount Pictures and Steven Spielberg took Mr. Benchley's script and made one of the most terrifying and successful films in history. The story of the great white shark brings drama, horror, thriller, and action themes all together in one. The result defined the spectacle film and changed both Hollywood and cinema forever. The summer movie was born yet as time has passed, re-evaluation of such films has clarified that such films have as much to say as those considered more academic.
With the 100th anniversary of Paramount Pictures, Jaws has been given a re-mastering. The new blu-ray and high definition release of the film comes to viewers this August resulting in arguably the greatest presentation of a now genre classic. Dark Discussions discusses the film and its many sidebars including its commentary on socioeconomics, the famous U.S.S. Indianapolis speech, how the 1970's made famous such iconic scientists as Jacques Cousteau, and why they think the film has continued to be loved today. Even if nostalgia is part of the film's appeal, whether by luck or skill, the tightly woven tale still feels as relevant today as it did in 1975.

Dark Discussions Episode 068 - Christopher Nolan Batman Trilogy Retrospective Part 2
Dark Discussions continues their discussion of Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy. Episode 067 (Part One) focused on the background of the films and how they came from the source material of the DC comics. The film Batman Begins which led the series explains the beginnings of Batman and how Bruce Wayne became the vigilante known as Batman.
In Part Two of the retrospective your co-hosts discuss The Dark Knight rises and the intricate way the screenplay was able to adapt Harvey Dent and the Joker into a dark and foreboding world that never falls into comic book silliness. Things mentioned include the recasting of the Rachel Dawes character, the award winning performance of Heath Ledger, how Harvey Dent was presented as a politician and legal force, as well as how a series of films goes even deeper into genre and horror cinema.
To wrap up the episode, the latest film, 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, is reviewed and analyzed. Were the female characters in the film as strong as they appear? Who was the mysterious Blake character? Did Tom Hardy match Heath Ledger in his role as the villain Bane? Are critics, both on the right and left of the political spectrum, overstating the film's political messages? Get ready and find out. Email Dark Discussions and let them know your take.

Dark Discussions Episode 067 - Christopher Smith Batman Trilogy Retrospective Part 1
In 2000, producers took notice of a little film entitled Memento directed by Christopher Nolan. With alternative cinema taking audiences imaginations to new heights, Nolan was being mentioned in the same breath as such contemporaries as Quentin Tarantino, Doug Liman, Guy Richie, and David Fincher who were molding the path of cinema in a direction that hadn’t been seen since the likes of Martin Scorsese, Paul Schrader, John Cassavetes, and William Friedkin.
After establishing himself in 2002 with both actors and producers alike with the highly acclaimed dark crime drama Insomnia, Nolan was given the reins to a reboot of the mysterious vigilante comic book character, Batman. The character was as ambiguous as his many adaptations. From the campy 1960’s Adam West television adaption to the Tim Burton version, the character had seemed to run its course and reverted back to its public perception as quaint.
However, with his alternative cinema roots and the various dark and brooding story lines of some of the character’s comic arcs, Christopher Nolan created a Batman that was about an individual filled with demons that haunted him more than the psychopathic villains he seemed to face. This version of Batman was not a child’s silly live action cartoon but an intricate tale that encompassed weighty topics seen only in “important” cinema. Dark Discussions begins a retrospective on Nolan’s Batman and the films that have swept the imaginations of film audiences world wide.
