Vicis Interimo Episode 108: Marebito

Welcome to episode 108! This week we review the 2004 Japanese film 'Marebito', by director Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On, The Grudge). We also watched Diary of a Wimpy Kid this week, since last week we mentioned the sequel. Other short topics include the TV show 'Ink Master', and the quirky movie 'Adaptation' starring Nicolas Cage and Meryl Streep. These generate some discussion on reality TV shows and whether or not Nicolas Cage is a good actor (he really is!). In the next couple weeks we'll be having Slug (from the Slugcast) join us for a review of Vincent Price's 'Abominable Dr. Phibes'. We're looking forward to it! ... Thanks for joining us this week!

Masuoka (Shinya Tsukamoto), a fragile cameraman who's afraid of the unknown that he's certain lurks around every corner, is the last person one would expect to rise to the occasion when courage is needed. But that he does when he winds up with an assignment that has him looking into an urban myth about specters that supposedly haunt Tokyo's subterranean travel system in this fantastical film directed by Takashi Shimizu.

Dark Discussions Podcast: Episode 047 - H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds Part 1

The novel, The War of the Worlds, written in 1898 has been in print from first publication until today without interruption. H. G. Wells, author of such other novels as The Invisible Man and The Time Machine, presents a story about a war where an alien race of beings from the planet Mars turns their eyes towards Earth, a planet filled with resources and natural beauty, still untainted by pollution and toxins. Writing in journal format, Wells turns a simple science fiction story into a fearful prophecy of total war where civilians would become targets while burnt earth strategies would become the norm. Man’s dependence upon technology and communication would be nullified and humanity’s dominance of the world they live in would be no more.

The tale is a foretelling of things to come that peculiarly showed how an alien invasion was a figurative metaphor of how man’s inhumanity upon man would make the 20th century one of the most destructive in world history. With the world’s dependence on technology for a more pampered life, it also would bring with it dangers that were only forewarned in 1898. And the irony of the story is that what would stop the Martians would be bacteria, Earth’s smallest and tiniest organisms.

Dark Discussions, in this first part of a three part arc, discuss the novel, its importance to genre fiction, and the writer who came up with a story which at the time was an astoundingly original idea. Further discussion includes the first great interpretation of the story by Orson Welles’s Mercury Theater, a radio theater presentation that brought about a panic to those who listened thinking it to be an actual news bulletin. Orson Welles shows how in 1938 he would become one of the greatest actor/director’s in history while bringing his cohorts at the Mercury Theater (including composer Bernard Herrmann) to the attention of the world.

After two weeks off the air, we've returned to discuss Wes Craven's 'My Soul to Take'. We have a HUGE 'garbage in, garbage out' segment this week which includes the movies 'Rocky Balboa', 'Michael Moore Hates America', 'Say Anything', 'A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon', 'The Fearless Vampire Killers', 'Megamind', and 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2'. We also enjoyed watching the 2000 mini series 'Dune' this week, so talk a little bit about that, as well as the anime 'Black Butler'. Dolls of Despair #3 Interview with Roxsy Tyler

There are few females in the horror film industry today who have more going on in their career, before the age of 30, then our favorite Horror Hostess, Roxsy Tyler, who is nominated for Horror Host of 2011 in the Rondos (VOTE NOW)! Although she has been working in the industry since 2007, Roxsy’s big film debut when she brought her Carnival of Horrors to life in the Spring of 2010, via Potent Media, accompanied by her co-hosts Christopher Walker, Christian Jude Grillo, Chuck Maher, Johnnie Howard. Roxy’s signature look is darkly gorgeous, always including her black top hat, goth/rocker clothing and clown like make-up, a beautiful yet hardened look compared to her everyday soft features, reddish brown hair and petite frame. Her love of the Marx Brothers shines through as Roxsy bosses the boys around her carnival while they share their, usually, cheesy B movie choice of the month.
Roxsy starred opposite Raine Brown in the 2010 release of Booley, Potent Pictures first feature film, a great revenge story that addresses the continual problem of bullying in schools. Roxsy also starred in the Tom Berdinski film, The Giant Rubber Monster Movie, which is nominated for a short film Rondo Award (VOTE NOW), alongside many other popular horror hosts. The much anticipated indie horror film, Deer Crossing, another Potent Pictures film, should be released in 2012, and is presently being accepted for screening in horror conventions and film festivals globally, four to date! Roxsy also has an acting role in Deer Crossing, that also stars Christopher Mann, Doug Bradley, Ernie Hudson, Laura Cottrel, KJ Linehan, and Chris Inlow, but she is also Co-Editor and did some still photography for it as well. Roxsy has proven her acting and writing ability, but she is also fast becoming experienced in all the other facets of filmmaking, directing, editing and working the camera!
